About Us

Our Philosophy

One Step Up Childcare view families as the child’s first and most influential educators and therefore we believe that families should be the root of our program. We work in partnership with families, valuing their knowledge, culture, and role in the lives of their children, ensuring every child feels supported and understood in their learning journey to ensure consistency and continuity.

We celebrate the rich diversity of our community by embracing and respecting all cultures, languages, and traditions. Our centre is committed to fostering an inclusive environment where all children, families, and staff feel welcomed and valued, ensuring that differences are not just accepted, but celebrated.

The safety and well-being of our children are paramount. We are dedicated to creating a nurturing, secure, and safe environment where children can explore, grow, and learn with confidence.

Our approach is guided by the Reggio Emilia philosophy, where we view children as capable, curious, and creative individuals. We provide an environment that fosters inquiry, exploration, and collaboration, encouraging children to take an active role in their learning.

We acknowledge the traditional custodians of the land, the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. We recognise their enduring connection to the land, waters, and community and incorporate this understanding into our practices and teachings, paying respect to Elders past, present, and emerging.

We understand the profound significance of the first five years of life and honour that responsibility in all that we do. We recognise these early years as a foundation for future learning and development, ensuring that every interaction and experience supports the holistic growth of each child.

What makes us different?

What makes us special is our commitment to provide each child with an unprecedented level of individual care, quality education, and genuine love, all of which are guided by our core values.

At One Step Up Childcare we extend well beyond just providing a safe and caring environment for our children. We believe that innovation drives development in our little ones. By exposing our children to a variety of different experiences and activities, we help them take pride in doing ordinary things extraordinarily well. This commitment to quality early learning helps us ensure each child’s best start to life.

Our collaborative approach encourages diversity and inclusion, ensuring every child feels accepted and develops the ability to think, imagine and play freely as they start their life’s journey.

Most importantly, our commitment to integrity to our children and parents is ensured in our promise to apply high ethical standards every day through the use of National Regulations and Laws.

At the heart of our work is a deep commitment to nurturing powerful, confident children who feel a strong sense of belonging and pride in who they are. We believe that every child deserves to grow up in an environment where they are seen, heard, and celebrated—not only for their individuality but also for the rich cultural backgrounds they bring with them.

Our mission is to create a loving, inclusive, and empowering space where children are encouraged to embrace their identities and feel safe to express themselves fully. We honor each child's unique heritage, helping them build a positive self-image rooted in cultural awareness and mutual respect. By fostering a community built on love, empathy, and acceptance, we ensure that every child knows they matter and that their story is valued.

We are dedicated to providing holistic learning experiences that support both academic and emotional growth. Through thoughtful teaching practices, creative exploration, and meaningful connections, we aim to inspire curiosity, resilience, and a lifelong love of learning. Our goal is not just to educate, but to cultivate strong, kind, and confident young people who are ready to thrive in the world and make a positive impact on others.

As we shape young minds, we are equally committed to shaping a sustainable future. We believe that empowering children also means equipping them with the knowledge, values, and skills to care for their communities and the planet. Through environmental awareness, social responsibility, and culturally rooted practices, we prepare our children to become thoughtful stewards of a more just, equitable, and sustainable world.

Maintaining Sustainability

We believe that sustainability is not just a concept—it’s a daily practice and a vital part of how we educate, care for, and empower the next generation. Our approach to sustainability is holistic, embedded into everything we do—from the materials we use to the way we engage with children, families, and our broader community.

1. Environmen

We believe that sustainability is not just a concept—it’s a daily practice and a vital part of how we educate, care for, and empower the next generation. Our approach to sustainability is holistic, embedded into everything we do—from the materials we use to the way we engage with children, families, and our broader community.

1. Environmentally Conscious Learning Spaces

We design our learning environments to reflect our respect for nature and our responsibility to protect it. This includes:

  • Using natural, non-toxic, and recycled materials wherever possible.

  • Minimizing plastic use and opting for durable, biodegradable, or reusable resources.

  • Incorporating plants and natural elements into indoor and outdoor spaces to foster a connection with the Earth.

2. Nature-Based and Outdoor Learning

We actively encourage children to build a meaningful relationship with the natural world. Through regular outdoor play, gardening, and nature walks, children learn to care for their surroundings, observe ecosystems, and develop a deep appreciation for biodiversity.

3. Reducing Waste and Reusing Resources

We teach children and staff the value of reducing waste and reusing what we have:

  • Engaging children in rubbish, sorting recyclables and composting food scraps.

  • Repurposing everyday items into creative learning tools (e.g., cardboard for art projects, jars for science experiments).

4. Sustainable Food and Nutrition

Our food practices reflect our commitment to health, community, and the planet:

  • Providing nutritious meals and snacks with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients where possible.

  • Reducing food waste by teaching portion awareness and involving children in food preparation and gardening.

5. Embedding Sustainability into the Curriculum

We intentionally weave sustainability into our educational philosophy:

  • Offering projects and conversations around topics like recycling, climate change, Indigenous land stewardship, water conservation, and caring for animals.
  • Helping children understand the interconnectedness of people and planet.
  • Encouraging critical thinking about how their choices affect the world around them.

6. Honouring Cultural Sustainability

Sustainability for us also means preserving and celebrating culture:

  • Teaching children to value traditional ecological knowledge, especially from Indigenous and ancestral perspectives.
  • Creating space for intergenerational learning and cultural storytelling that keeps community wisdom alive.
  • Fostering pride in diverse cultural identities as a foundation for sustainable communities.

7. Staff and Community Engagement

We model what we teach:

  • Providing ongoing professional development in sustainable practices for educators.

STEAM

What is STEAM?

What is STEAM?

What is STEAM?

Here at One Step Up Childcare, children are given endless opportunities to  explore the exciting fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Mathematics (STEAM).

Why STEAM?

What is STEAM?

What is STEAM?

Children are always curious and eager to solve problems. This is why we have implemented  STEAM into our curriculum to encourage children to design, create, test, observe and experiment while they connect to real world problems and explore a range of open-ended materials to problem solve. STEAM encourages children to be imaginative and innovative in a collaborative environment with space to investigate a problem over an extended period of time. This allows them opportunities to engage in sustained shared thinking.
